Visitor Follow-Up Strategy
After years of disappointments, World Revival Church’s leadership team executed a focused follow up plan for first‐time visitors. While somewhat demanding in approach, the results have been quite substantial. According to Mark Pederson, associate pastor in charge of outreach, World Revival Church experienced a 45% increase in first‐time visitors returning – largely through the efforts of this program. In the following, the eight basic components of this follow up plan are going to be discussed. It is hoped that these items will be helpful for determining what needs to be done in your place of ministry.
1. Greeting
On Sunday Morning, all church members and attendees, including “non‐member first‐time visitors,” are greeted by a series of trained greeters.
- Foyer Greeters welcome members and guests or provide directions if asked.
- Sanctuary Door Greeters handout guest packets and encourage “non‐member first‐time visitors” or “guests,” to sign a guest “logbook.”
- Zone Greeters move through the sanctuary and talk to guests. They make sure each family has a “guest card.” They also look for “returning guests.” Afterward all cards are given to the associate pastor.
2. Connection
On a Sunday Morning, all “non‐member first‐time visitors” are strongly encouraged to fill out a “guest card.” This card provides accurate contact information about them and their family and enables follow up.
- If guests give their “guest cards” to the pastors in the foyer, after service they will receive a gift (a worship CD).
- Visitor cards are turned in to a team member who makes photocopies and turns them in to the Associate Pastor.
3. Visitation
Local visitors are visited at their homes on the same Sunday afternoon they first visited the church by designated lay teams. They are given a gift and thanked for coming. (Each “visit” is only about 5‐10 minutes)
4. Data
On Monday, a team member enters all contact information from the Sunday morning visitors into a database system (Excel) and emails this information to the Associate Pastor.
- From this information the Associate Pastor makes a detailed log of visitors that all staff can later review.
5. Letter
All visitors receive a preprinted personal letter from pastor on the Monday following their visit. They are thanked for coming and invited back.
6. Association
On Tuesday evening pastors and/or pastoral teams visit promising first‐ time visitors in their homes. (Each visit isn't longer than 15 minutes)
7. Call
On Wednesday evening, telephones are manned by a lay team who make follow up calls as assigned by the pastoral team.
8. Invite
On Friday local visitors are contacted by phone by Associate Pastors and invited to come back to the weekend services.
