Sample Wedding Vows
You are encouraged to use the following vows as a basis for developing a wedding service for a Spirit‐filled Christian couple. Adapt the words as necessary and feel free to add other elements as the service or occasion necessitates. The vows are currently formatted in such a way that they can folded in half and placed in a Bible. If you have any other questions feel free to contact the World Revival network office.
THE QUESTION
TO GROOM: William, do you take Natalie as your wedded wife, to live together in God’s holy union of marriage? Do you take this woman to love as your own flesh, even as Christ loves the Church, to protect her, care for her, honor her, and forsaking all others, be faithful to her for the rest of your life?
RESPONSE: I do.
TO BRIDE: Natalie, do you take William as your wedded husband, to live together in God’s holy union of marriage? Do you take this man, submitting yourself to him as unto the Lord, giving reverence to him as the head of this union; to love him, honor him, and forsaking all others, be faithful to him for the rest of your life?
RESPONSE: I do.
THE VOWS
TO BOTH: Join hands, face each other & repeat after me
TO GROOM: I William, take Natalie, according to the Word of God, as my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death would separate us, and to this vow I pledge to be ever faithful.
TO BRIDE: I Natalie, take William, according to the Word of God, as my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, honor, and obey, till death would separate us, and to this vow I pledge to be ever faithful.
THE RINGS (ask for rings)
In the Bible when God made a covenant with Noah, He set a rainbow in the sky as a sign of the covenant. He said “I will look upon it that I may remember the ever‐lasting covenant.” We learn from this that it is good to have a reminder of our pledge to each other. Because of this William and Natalie have chosen to exchange rings. These rings are a token and a reminder of their faith, love and covenant together before their God.
The rings are made of gold, a precious and enduring metal. Gold is the symbol of the value and honor God places on covenant faith, something God values and expects. The value of God is derived from its rarity and purity. In the same way your love and covenant is to be valued and kept as a pure and rare thing. Gold is made pure by the refining fire, likewise life will be like a fire to refine your love and bring to it a purity, strength and value greater than gold.
Also, the ring is an endless circle, which speaks of the endlessness of the covenant commitment in God’s mind.
Wear these rings as a continual reminder of your covenant union before God.
TO GROOM: Take this ring, place it on Natalie’s third finger and say after me: With this ring, I thee wed. It is a token of my love for you, and a token of faith in God, and a reminder of our covenant of marriage, in the name of Jesus Christ.
TO BRIDE: Take this ring, place it on William’s third finger and say after me: With this ring, I thee wed. It is a token of my love for you, and a token of faith in God, and a reminder of our covenant of marriage, in the name of Jesus Christ.
TO COUPLE: As a representative of the Church of Jesus Christ,
before God the Father, in the Name of His Son Jesus, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, I now pronounce you husband and wife.
What God has joined together let no man try to separate. You may kiss your bride.
TO CONGREGATION: William and Natalie have chosen to light a unity candle – symbolic of the two becoming one in marriage. After lighting the candle they will celebrate, as the first act of the married life together, communion in the Lord. We invite the congregation to watch and rejoice with them as they celebrate.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION & BLESSING
TO ALL: I now take great pleasure in presenting to all of you, MR AND MRS William Mitchel Gray.
